THE VIKINGS LOCK UP MORE YOUNG DEFENSIVE TALENT

For the Minnesota Vikings, the future is now. The Vikes have already locked up their elite franchise quarterback in Kirk Cousins to lead a young dangerous offense with plenty of weapons. Now Minnesota is attending to arguably (the Jaguars) the league’s best defense by extending all their young talent early, the latest being pass rushing defensive end Danielle Hunter.

While Hunter’s new deal has not been confirmed by the Vikings, several media “sources” have announced it to be five years for $72 million, $40 million guaranteed with a $15 million dollar signing bonus. The approximate $14 million per is top-ten money for the position and rewards a player that was “just” a third round draft pick, No.88 overall. Hunter recorded just 25.5 sacks in his three years as a specialist coming off the edge. This year the Vikings are expecting a break out year and 15 sacks in his new starting role.

Minnesota has done an excellent job of drafting and could have be the “Defense” of the future. The unit features a shutdown corner in Xavier Rhodes and possibly the best safety in football in Harrison Smith. The line backing corps is loaded with Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks who was also just extended on a five-year, $50 million dollar deal. Hunter has two excellent run stopping interior defensive linemen in Linval Joseph and Sheldon Richardson. Barring injury, the Viking defense should be a scary proposition for opposing quarterbacks and offenses for years to come.
