THE SEAHAWKS CUT TIES WITH 2017 TOP DRAFT PICK

A career in Seattle was never to be for Michigan State DE Malik McDowell as the Seahawks cut ties with their top draft pick of 2017 by releasing with a non-football injury designation. The Seahawks thought enough of McDowell last year to trade out of the first round and take him in the early second round and making him the 35th overall pick. McDowell would never wear a Seahawk jersey or play a down in the NFL as days before the opening of camp; McDowell was involved in an ATV accident that almost took his life. Prior to the accident, Seattle had signed him to a four-year deal worth $6.95 million with $4.4 million guaranteed, $3.19 million coming in a signing bonus.

The 6’6″ 300 pound defensive tackle out of Michigan State suffered severe head injuries that included brain damage and permanent eye damage. McDowell sat out the entire 2017 and it is unclear as to whether or not McDowell will make it back on the field this year or ever prompting Seattle to make the move. McDowell played two years for Michigan State and was second-team All-Big Ten both years.

In other Seattle Seahawks training camp news, Kam Chancellor has been put on the (Pup List) Physically Unable to Perform list and may have played his final game with the Legion of Boom. The move was not unexpected and the four-time All Pro will likely retire. Regardless of Chancellor plays again or not, Pete Carroll will be trotting out a different kind of defense than the one we’ve been seeing over a pretty good five-year run that included a Super Bowl championship.
