SHAZIER WORKING WITH STEELERS WHILE WALKING WITH A CANE

Linebacker Ryan Shazier was arguably the Pittsburgh Steelers best defensive player when he went down with a severe spinal injury making a tackle against the Cincinnati Bengals last December. Eight months later, after surgery and extensive rehab, Shazier is back in the Pittsburgh training camp working with the linebackers. Shazier is currently watching drills and then participating in the post-practice film sessions.

Shazier will not play in 2018 and is currently walking with a cane, but his involvement with the team is with the goal that he will return to the playing field in 2019. He’s told teammates that his goal is not only to return to the playing field but also making it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Shazier says that he is putting in the same time and effort in rehab and he has on the football field and fully expects to be walking without assistance shortly.

The Steelers did little in the way of replacing Shazier during the off-season and one of the biggest questions in the Steeler’s camp is how Pittsburgh will replace his play up the middle. The Steeler’s signed journeyman Jon Bostic to a two-year $4 million dollar contract. Pittsburgh will be Bostic’s fifth team in a six-year career that includes stops in Chicago, New England, Detroit and Indy. Mathew Thomas, an undrafted free agent from Florida State, has a big chance to make the team in camp and even challenge Bostic for time with a good preseason.
