Rush For The Roses: MSU Vs. Stanford

Written by Marina Petz

East Lansing, Michigan is home sweet home for the Michigan State Spartans. A team that not only had their eyes on the Big Ten Legends Division Title, but their ultimate goal – reaching the Rose Bowl. Just as the banners hung proudly on the Spartans practice field say chase it, and you are the ones, this once underrated team have earned their spot in Rose Bowl for the first time since their 1988 20-17 victory over USC.

The Spartans left critics and fans in awe as their defense helped the Spartans dominate during their regular season games, with only one loss to Notre Dame. After clenching the Big Ten Legends Division title, they faced their hardest opponent, Urban Meyer and the then number two ranked Buckeyes. The battle of the Big Ten ended with the Spartans smelling the roses, and the Buckeyes suddenly shutout of the BCS game. For the first time, the usual stern facial expression of Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio turned into a smile. For their final game of the season, the 4th ranked Spartans will face the 5th ranked Stanford Cardinal.

The Spartans have taken the media by storm after senior linebacker and team captain Max Bullough was suspended and will not play in the Rose Bowl. The shocking suspension of Bullough leaves many wondering if the Spartans still have the determination and focus that helped lead them to their 12-1 season.

It will be the final test to see if the Michigan State defense has what it takes to hold off the Cardinal offense when they face off in the 100th Rose Bowl on Wednesday Jan. 1st.
