RAMS LOCK UP TODD GURLEY WITH RECORD EXTENSION

The Rams and running back Todd Gurley have reached agreement on a four-year contract extension worth $60 million with $45 million in guaranteed money. The deal also reportedly includes a $20 million signing bonus. The record breaking deal locks the soon-to-be 24 year-old Gurley the highest paid player at the running back position. Gurley blossomed under new Ram coach Sean McVay’s more wide open offense, leading the league in yards from scrimmage with 2093, rushing touchdowns with 19, and rushing and receiving touchdowns combined with 19. Gurley was voted AP Offensive Player of the Year.

While the numbers are huge, the contract is actually team friendly to the Rams. Gurley has two-years left on his rookie deal which pays him $2.3 million dollars in 2018 and $9 million in 2019 making the actual worth about $12 million per over the length of the contract. Most importantly, it allows the Rams to address their most pressing need which is signing defensive tackle Aaron Donald who is arguably the best defensive player in the league. Donald refused the Ram’s extension offer last year and is playing in the final year of his rookie contract. The Rams are actively seeking to sign Donald and the contract will likely be close to quarterback money and make Donald the highest paid defensive player in the league.
