LEAGUE AND PLAYERS ASSOCIATION HIT BREAKS ON ANTHEM POLICY

With the backlash created by the Miami Dolphins filing required paperwork to the NFL that outlined potential disciplinary measures to players (suspensions of up to four games) who protest the national anthem, the league and the Players Association have agreed to a moratorium on the new NFL anthem policy.

A joint statement by the NFL and the NFLPA today read, “no new rules relating to the anthem will be issued or enforced for the next several weeks” while both sides continue discussions to find a common ground.

In May, the NFL said that it would fine teams that had players sitting or taking a knee during the national anthem. The league allowed for players to stay in the locker room during the national anthem if they wished and that teams would decide the punishment of players not in compliance. That was the required paperwork filed by the Dolphins and eventually by all 32 of the league teams.

The NFLPA immediately filed a grievance challenging the new policy but it was yet to be heard. Now the two sides are back to the drawing board to hammer out a policy agreeable to both sides.
