Keenum and Texans in a ‘Must Win’ over Jags

Written by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports
Amid all the holiday hangovers and ‘What if’ playoff scenarios, even the most seasoned fantasy football vet could have a hard time keeping up with the NFL quarterback rotations for Week 17. It’s first world problem to the nth degree, but for Texan fans there are serious ramifications and their razor thin playoff hopes are hinging on former University of Houston standout Case Keenum.

Odds favor the Texans by -9.5 points over Jacksonville and the total is in a holding pattern at 40.5. Andre Johnson (concussion), DeAndre Hopkins (wrist) and Arian Foster (hip) are all likely to play but the Jags will counter with their five big playmakers from last week (that’s right, we just used the words ‘Jags’ and ‘playmaker’ in the same sentence).

Blake Bortles, Toby Gerhardt, Jordan Todman, Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns may not be household names just yet but they are a big part of Jacksonville’s offensive foundation. More important than that, they are the healthy part – and this week they are looking to stomp Houston’s playoff hopes while delivering a message for next season.

The Texans took the first meeting in Jacksonville 27-13 (UN 41.5) and when rivals meet again just a few weeks later, the latest results show a record of 35-18-2 O/U. The Jags are also getting points off a Thursday night home game and road teams in this spot have cashed “Over” tickets at a 67-percent rate since 1995 (42-21-1 O/U).

Jacksonville dug itself into an 0-6 SU hole before finally winning this year and then it was five more games before they notched win No. 2. Second-year HC Gus Bradley has to prove that he and Bortles are capable of competing in an important divisional road game and they are going to come in fighting for their lives in this one. Houston needs plenty of help from the Browns and Chiefs but first and foremost, they need a straight-up win and the bottom line is that they just don’t like the Jags much. The brakes have already come off and this one’s heading down the hill, gathering speed. Take advantage of the low total and overrated D’s.

Take the Over
