New England Patriot wide receiver Julian Edelman had the appeal of his four-game PED denied and as a result will sit out the first for games of the upcoming season. The former quarterback out of Kent State will miss games against the Texans, Jaguars, Lions, and Dolphins and will return in New England’s fifth game vs. the Colts. The suspension will cost Edelman $470,588 in salary.

Edelman, who missed the entire 2017 season with a torn ACL, was handed the four-game ban in May for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. Edelman had his appeal heard on June 25th and many legals and league executives felt that Edelman had a strong case to win.

The substance that Edelman has been accused of using has never been formally identified and is referred to as “Substance A” in the paperwork. Edelman further cites the sloppy handling of his samples as the points of his appeal. The sample is currently being analyzed by scientists for identification as NFL testers were unable to come up with an exact identification.

While Edelman did not play last year, he was a favorite Tom Brady “go to” guy out of the slot and between 2013 and 2016 has average production with 957 yards and five touchdowns. With Danny Amendola taking his talents to Miami in free agency and Brandin Cooks being dealt to the Rams, Edelman’s loss is not insignificant.
