Jeff Allen Game Preview: Michigan at Ohio State

One the nation’s top gridiron rivalries reprises itself on the college hardwood tonight as the Michigan Wolverines travel  to Columbus,Ohio to face the Ohio State Buckeyes. Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer won’t be patrolling the sidelines but Jim Beilein and Thad Matta are pretty good coaches in their own right. Michigan (19-7, 9-4) is off a huge gut check win over Purdue, Ohio State (16-10, 8-5) routinely dispatched Rutgers 69-59 in it’s last. The line opened Ohio State -1 with the high/low set at 139. At this writing, Michigan money has made this one a pick with the total down a half click to 138 1/2.

It’s been  a strange year for Michigan. The Wolverines got off to a terrible start, losing some non-conference games (UConn) they probably should have won. They’ve pretty much taken care of business in the Big Ten with their four losses coming at Purdue, at Iowa and at home to Indiana and Michigan State. Normal conference attrition. The Wolverines best player, Caris LaVert (16.5, 5.3, 4.9) has battled injuries and played in just 15 games. He appears to be close to 100% now and will be key to Michigan’s final run to the Big Dance.

Ohio State is on a down year for them and Thad Matta has actually been a victim of his own recruiting success. The Buckeyes
a bunch of underclassmen to the NBA the last few years including PG D’Angelo Russell last year as the second overall
pick to the Lakers. Matta once again has a young team that features seven freshman and four sophomores but this group has taken a bit longer to come together. Teh Buckeyes have three players that average double-digits led by junior forward Marc Loving (12.5, 5.9). There are no real standout talents on this roster and Matta should be able to keep everyone home and return as a conference player next year.

This has been a VERY home court dominated series with the home team winning 13 of the last 15 meetings. Michigan has won four of the last five in the series but has lost 10 straight on this floor. The Buckeyes are 4-1 in conference losing to Maryland by five. The over is 6-1 in Michigan road games and a perfect 8-0 after the Wolverines allow less than 60 points. The over is 8-5 in Ohio State’s 13 conference games and could be the way to look with both numbers seemingly close to dead on.

World Champion Handicapper Jeff Allen split yesterday, winning his Horizon League Game of the Year with Oakland (-2) in a 16-point road blowout over Wright State and got hooked with East Tennessee late. Allen is now 18-5 in college hoops over his L23 premium releases and his MAC Conference Game of the Year wins tonight!
